Sanglap Kolkata was formed in 1979 by a handful of enthusiastic, dedicated, theatre loving youth who vowed to stage good dramas with the objectives of highlighting social evils and disparities and also to make theatre more people-oriented, to take theatre to the masses and to make it mobile as also radical. Keeping this objective in mind, Sanglap Kolkata has always endeavoured to produce and stage dramas involving issues that have social importance and values. Its first production was "ISPAT", based on Nikolai Ostrovosky's masterpiece "How the Steel was Tempered". It was very encouraging for the members of Sanglap Kolkata when its first production drew accolades from the theatre personalities as well as from the common viewers. Drawing inspiration from the appreciation it received for "ISPAT", next venture of Sanglap Kolkata was TALWAR, based on a short story of the famous Chinese Litterateur Lu Sun. This production too was praised by the viewers in general. The drama was first staged in the year 1984 and drew a good number of audience. The productions that were staged in the following years include Head Officer Barababu and Tipu Sultan. In 1993, Sanglap presented Disha based on the Volga Theke Ganga by Rahul Sankrityayan. Staging of this production was contemplated to commemorate the birth centenary of Rahul Sankrityayan. The production was well received by the critics and viewers and was honoured with Drama Academy Award as best production of 1993. The production that was initiated in 1994 was Ghare Phera based on 'Home Coming' by Harold Pinter. It claimed high praise and appreciation from eminent theatre personalities as well as critics. It has been staged in Calcutta as well as in the districts. The next venture was Swapna Niye, which too drew appreciation. Both these productions were simultaneously staged in Calcutta and outside for a good number of times. With the aim to re-interpret the classical epic Ramayana from a sociological standpoint in order to prove its relevance in the modern world and to instill appreciation for our traditional values among the younger generation and in order to show the spirit of India as depicted in Ramayana, Sanglap Kolkata produced and staged Sudrayana in 1998. The conflict between modern agriculturists and the more primitive hunting and food-gathering society of the Vindhya region is the main theme of the drama. The production has been highly praised byp the viewers in general, the critics, eminent theatre personalities as well as eminent personalities of other walks of life. The drama has been staged many times in Calcutta including its suburbs and in the districts and it has been well accepted by one and all whenever it has been staged before an audience. In its existence of twenty years, Sanglap Kolkata has produced and staged a number of one-act plays, viz. Bidhi-O-Betikram (based on Brecht), Tarasher Bhar, Tagore's Rather Rashi, Jagaran, Aayna, Prastab and Padma-Ghokro. Of these productions Bidhi-O-Betikram and Aayna were most successful in terms of number of shows an the appreciation it received from the audience. The Group has been organising Drama Festival every year during January-February since 1993. Eminent theatre groups of Calcutta as well as from Bangladesh, Hongkong, Bhopal and Delhi have participated in this annual event called Sanglap Natyotsab. Paatini |
