Sundaram, non-professional
theatre organisation, was founded in the year 1957 with the aim of experimenting
with drama and Dramatics for development of non-commercial theatres. The
main objectives of the organisation are as follows:

Staging good plays with the original ideas relating to form
and content
-
Attracting more and more audiences towards non-commercial
theatre
-
Presenting purposeful theatres dealing with social problems
and intricate human relations
-
Searching new talents to train them in the various fields of
theatre
-
Helping the movement in the country for good theatre free
from the commercial allurements.
Sundaram, during its
eventful existence for the last 40 years, has many achievements to be mentioned
in brief, and are as follows:

Stages several thousands of performances of 40 productions
of popular plays like Finger-Print, Kancha, Parabas, Sajano Bagan,
Mesh-O-Rakshash, Alokanandar Putra Kanya, Shovajatra, Galpo Hekim Saheb,
etc.

Many plays produced by Sundaram
won awards and prizes from both Government and non-Government organisations.
To name a few: (1) Mrityur Chokhe Jal by Manoj Mitra, during 1959,
won several prizes and it was included in the syllabus of drama studies
under Rabindra Bharati University; (b) Sajano Bagan, one of the most
popular play by Manoj Mitra was produce in the year 1977 and the same is
still being performed throughout India. This production has also won awards
at State Level.

Alokanandar Putra Kanya was adjudged Best Production
and the lead heroine also was awarded the Best Actress Award by the West
Bengal State Natya Academy in the year 1990. This production also won the 'Siromani
Purashkar' initiated by the Asian Paints Ltd., for best cultural achievement
in India in the year 1990.

The recent production Galpo Hekim Saheb which
received Central Govt. Grant for production was a landmark in that the lead
actor was adjudged for the Best Actor Award by the West Bengal Natya Academy
in the year 1995, and the play also won the 'Siromani Purashkar' initiated
by Asian Paints Ltd. for the second time in the year 1995.
Sundaram also arranges
workshops and seminar on stage and drama by inviting eminent persons of various
branches of Drama. For the last 9 years, Sundaram has been arranging annual
competitions of playwriting in search of talent in the field of writing original
plays in Bengali.
DETAILS OF ACTIVITIES UNDERTAKEN DURING LAST TWO YEARS:
During the last two years Sundaram performed above 200 shows of
its popular plays namely Alakanandar Putra Kanya, Sajano Bagan and Galpo
Hekim Saheb, in, around and outside the state of West Bengal. During the
period Sundaram visited Delhi, Jamshedpur and Dhaka (Bangladesh), and Allahabad
with their productions. Now the group comes amidst the theatre loving audience
of Chennai with its production of Chayyar Prasad.
